Improved Limit Checking for Bitcoin Purchases

More Clarity on the KYC-Light Limit: What’s Changing – and Why

At Pocket, we want to make your bitcoin journey as simple as possible. That’s why you can buy up to CHF/EUR 999 without prior identification – thanks to the legal KYC-Light regulation.

Sounds simple? It is – as long as you stay within the limit.

The CHF/EUR 999 limit

The CHF/EUR 999 limit is not per transaction – it applies as a rolling amount across the last 30 days. This has recently led to unexpected issues for some users.

If you exceed the limit without realizing it, you’ll receive an email asking you to verify your identity. The process is quick and usually done within minutes. Still, for some users, the notice came as a surprise or was missed entirely.

Result: the payment was refunded, and the bitcoin purchase was rejected.

Improved limit checking

From today on, Pocket clearly communicates when your bitcoin purchase would exceed your currently active limits. This allows you to adjust your order size or complete a one-time identity verification to increase your limits.

You're in control.

Pocket App bitcoin buy screen communicating that a CHF 5000 purchase exceeds available limit of CHF 999 and identification is needed to proceed.
Available limits are now clearly communicated in the bitcoin buying process.

Recurring buys? Now only with verification

With more users setting up automated recurring payments (e.g. standing orders), we’ve seen a sharp rise in refunds.

The reason: limit exceeded – often without knowing.

To prevent this, we’re updating our rules: All newly created recurring orders will now require prior identity verification. This entirely lifts the CHF/EUR 999 limit per 30 days and helps ensure that you don’t get caught off guard.

Good to know: Recurring orders created in the past are not affected by this change and continue working as usual.

What’s changing, exactly?

  • In the app: Recurring buys remain available – but only for verified users. Not verified? You’ll see a clear notice and can start the KYC process instantly or use one-time orders, instead.
  • In the Bitbox app: You’ll now be able to choose between one-time or recurring purchases.
  • Selling: Only one-time transactions. Automation is not available here.
  • API access: No changes for now. We'll assess adjustments in dialogue with power users.

What stays the same?

One-time buys up to CHF/EUR 999 – directly on our website. Fast, easy, self-sovereign. All existing recurring purchases are not affected by the new rules and will continue to run as usual. No action is required on your part – the changes apply only to newly created recurring orders.

More transparency, less frustration

We’ll now provide clearer info about your current limit, why a transaction may be rejected – and how to continue with a quick identity check if needed.

Our FAQs have also been updated to help you find answers quickly when something’s unclear.

👉 Stay informed and make the most of your limit! Get familiar with the new rules, check your status in the app – and start the verification process if needed. This way, your bitcoin purchases stay simple, fast, and hassle-free.
